The Woodside Kid

Posted by Bernard | Filed under: Auto, Auto Art

A little over a week ago I had the pleasure of Designing and Hand-Painting a traditional "Flame Job" for one of the nicest "Hot-Rodders" you would ever want to meet.

His name is John Hospodavis of Masontown, PA - "The Real Deal"

John is an "Old-School" Auto Enthusiast from way back in the 50's when the whole custom car scene started to take root in this country.

Born and Raised in the tiny hamlet of "Woodside" just outside of McClellandtown, PA John took to what would be a lifetime of love for custom cars, nearly right away.

From Wrenching on his first car, a 1946 Plymouth at the ripe old age of 16, to just some of the classic cars to follow like the '53 Merc and a '50 Chevy, John cut his car culture teeth on the classics. All this during the glory days when Lead Sleds and other Cruisin' works of art were common place in nearly every small town in America. Back when they were not for showing but for driving!

Then the 60's brought him a stint in the U.S. Air Force where he became; not surprisingly, an Air Craft mechanic and together with his wife Theresa, began raising their family with the arrival of their 2 children Debbie and young John.

For nearly all of the 70's working as a Coal Miner, and in his brother's Paper Hanging and Painting business John built and raced Dune buggies of all types and styles. This resulted in their home becoming filled with trophies marking the racing success of both he AND his wife.

  • Old Business/New Image

When hired by a new business getting started or an existing one just looking to remodel their image, I always like to start with a really cool business card layout. For one, these days, you can get full-color business cards relativley cheap and it IS still oftentimes the "First Impression" your customer’s may have of your business and should NOT be overlooked.

Besides some "trademark" logo style of lettering for the name I always like to augment the card/design with an eye catcher of some sort. This customer has a really cool, old 1947 Studebaker Pickup Truck under restoration as their future shop truck, so I thought I work it into the mix just to make them unique and help seperate their card from the rest of the fold.

As far back as the first spark of auto enthusiasm for the American hot rod culture ignited, body shops and metal workers have been synonymous with the custom hot rod.

Finding myself smack in the middle of a good old fashioned one yesterday, I decided to chronicle that visit with this blog post.

It seems to me that when speaking of a typical, old-time body shop, regardless of the skill set, experience or money involved, that auto fanatics everywhere sought them out like the Romans and Greeks sought out sculptors and painting artisans of their day.

A little too dramatic of an example, you say? Well, maybe but then maybe you’re not a car nut. Because as every SERIOUS car crazy knows, sooner or later the stock wheels, tires, fender-shirts, decals (Heaven forbid ) and mud flaps, etc., must give way to a mild or radical body and paint treatment if you really want to own a true hot rod.
